Matters of Graves Importance: Make your plans for the last week of 2023

Wouldn’t it be delightful if the Christmas spirit lasted for more than a couple of months a year? As soon as January hits, the holiday spirit is gone. Heck, I think some of it is gone before New Year’s Eve. People grumble about going back to work, kids see their vacation days dwindling, the weather gets nasty…let’s face it, it’s hard to stay cheery after December.

I know it’s hard out there. I know some days it is a struggle to leave the house. I get it. We’ve all been there. We’ve also all had that one person turn our day around. Be that person who provides a smile or a kind word. You can go back to being grouchy when you get home but, if you check out these weekend events, you may keep on smiling into 2024.

Thursday

Name That Tune, with DJ Scott Roush, will be held at Dickey’s Barbecue at 6 p.m. The game will feature four rounds of music, with a $20 gift card for first place. The Davissons will perform at the Crosskeys Tavern from 7 to 10 p.m. If you take a drive to Kingston visit the Kings Inn Tavern for the music of Travis and Jacob, beginning at 7 p.m.

Friday

Jay Snyder and I will be performing at the Crown Hill Golf Club in Williamsport. Show time is at 8 p.m. and the doors open at 6:30 p.m. Snacks will be provided with a full cash bar available. Chase Patterson will be the host of the show. As of press time, 10 tickets remain. Tickets can be purchased at crownhillgolfclub.com. Brian Weiskittle returns to the taproom stage at Old Capitol Brewing at 7 p.m. and karaoke is happening at Wagner’s Roadhouse with DJ Roush from 7 to 11 p.m.

Saturday

The THICC BOIS are with HEY ALVEH at the Crosskeys Tavern at 9 p.m. for some live music on NYEE. Kadie Meadows brings her singer/songwriter skills to Wagner’s Roadhouse at 9 p.m.

Sunday (NYE)

Naz Vineyard and Winery is hosting the Poverty String Band Trio for their celebration. Doors open at 5 p.m., food service (wood fired pizza and catering by 7 Miles Smokehouse) begins at 6 p.m., and music starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $50 and available on Eventbrite. The Patrick’s Pub festivities begin at 10 p.m. with DJ JJones and includes party favors plus a midnight toast. I will be with Luke Capasso and DJ Trai at Creekside Occasions but check on Eventbrite and with the venue before you show up because this bash is dangerously close to selling out.

Looking ahead

Start your year at the historic Majestic Theatre on Jan. 13 at 7:30 p.m. with Murphy & Jimmy Clepper. “After moving to Seattle in 2020, Murphy auditioned for the TV show "American Idol" where he became a fan favorite following the performance of his original song "The Painted Man.” Fans of the show cried out at his departure, so much so that it led to him performing in the show’s 2021 finale.” Jimmy Clepper is best known for being the frontman and songwriter behind the hip-hop-inspired indie rock band, See You In The Funnies. Tickets are on sale now at majesticchillicothe.net.

Until next time. I hope to see you out laughing.
