Matters of Graves Importance: Pride festival this weekend

Another Ross County Fair is in the books. I am fifty years old and I can’t remember an August of my life when I haven't attended the fair. If you grew up in Ross County you know the fair was (and is) THE social week of the season. Heck, I made friends back then I still have to this day.

The older I get the more I complain about attending the ‘ole RCF but watching my 8-year-old bestie live his best life this past week was worth it. I am pretty sure the kid ate his weight in corn dogs and his blood undoubtedly turned into lemonade. Seeing the fair through his eyes this year took me back to when I was his age and I will admit I enjoyed the week a little more because he was in it. Remember back when everything was exciting and brought a smile to your face? That being said, moving to real talk with sappy words aside…if I don’t see another golf cart or a mullet until August 2023 I am ok with it.

I am also ok with the following entertainment options.

On Friday at Old Capitol Brewing enjoy the music of Joseph, Barnes, & Thacker from 8 to 11 p.m. The Pour House at Machinery Hall is hosting the Andy Shaw Band “BOB MARLEY” Tribute on their main stage at 8 p.m. For tickets contact the Pour House. At Steiner’s Speakeasy, check out Davey and The Midnights who have been touring the United States since 2017. The group is led by former Eric Burdon & The Animals keyboardist Davey Allen. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 day of the show. At 9 p.m. Mulgee Run plays the Cozy Inn Bar & Grill. I would love to invite you to my Barn on Blain comedy show with Adam Garman and Luke Capasso but it is sold out. Watch for tickets to our Sept. 17 show and buy early because the tickets go fast.

Celebrate Chillicothe PRIDE with the First Capital PRIDE Coalition in Yoctangee Park on Saturday. The festival kicks off at 10 a.m. Join FCPC for special presentations, music, vendors, food trucks, and more. All ages are welcome and entry is free. The celebration continues into the evening with the PRIDE Drag Show at the Elks Lodge #52 at 8 p.m. If you are looking for a grunge band flashback the Barn Rats are back at Wagner’s Roadhouse from 9 p.m. to midnight.

Open mic comedy returns to Old Capitol Brewing on Sunday, Aug. 21 with me. Spend your late afternoon with laughter and support local as I host a full slate of comics featuring closer Johnny Woods.

Looking ahead…Sept. 10 comedian Henry Cho is appearing at the Majestic Theatre and I have the honor of being his host. Henry is well-known as a "clean" comedian forgoing profanity and objectionable material and has sometimes been referred to as "Mr. Clean.” His work can be heard nationwide several times weekly on XM Radio's Channel 151, Laugh USA, Sirius Radio's Blue Collar Radio Channel 103, and Pandora Radio's PG Comedy Radio Channel. Cho is notable for being one of the only Asian acts to appear regularly on the Grand Ole Opry. Cho has also appeared in several television shows and feature films. Tickets available on the Majestic Theatre website or can be purchased in person at the Ross-Chillicothe Convention and Visitors Bureau on North Plaza Blvd.

Until next time. I hope to see you out and laughing.
