Matters of Graves Importance: Sand in the Streets this Saturday

This weekend, Chillicothe is hosting a beach party! Put on your flip-flops, bring your beach chair, and apply that sunscreen.

Sand in the Streets 2023 will take place on Paint Street beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday. Approximately 400 tons of sand will be poured in front of the courthouse for this all-day volleyball tournament. There will be three divisions: open, competitive, and recreational. The tournament will enforce FIVB4 sand rules and will be followed by the third annual afterparty, Beachfest, with live music by Shakin’ and Stirred. A $5 admission will get you a wristband that will allow you to enter and exit the area throughout the entire event. This is big but it isn’t all that you can dip your toes into this weekend. Let’s get to it.

The Andy Shaw Band takes the stage at The Pour House at Machinery Hall on Friday from 8 to 11 p.m. General admission is $10 and VIP tables are available. For tickets visit pouronchillicothe.com. Cody Kennedy, singer-songwriter and guitarist, will perform at Steiner's Speakeasy at 9 p.m. while DJ Chris McKey will be spinning the tunes at the Cozy Inn Bar & Grill at 9 p.m. for the first Friday Night Lights of the year. You can find Gage Chaney at Old Capitol Brewing's taproom from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Dickey's Barbecue Pit is hosting Name That Tune & Karaoke with DJ Roush. There will be four rounds of music and the winner will receive a $20 gift card. Karaoke will follow the game.

On Saturday, Mulgee Run plays Wagner's Roadhouse from 8 to 11 p.m. Building Rockets will make their debut performance at Steiner’s at 8 p.m. The band describes themselves as "not a country band but we’ve got some twang." The Crosskeys Tavern will open at 11 a.m. and offer drink specials, food, and a full day of entertainment. Bike Night will start at six and end at eleven. DJ Jones will play 90s hip hop and R&B starting at 7 p.m. and DJ Cyn Rose will take over The ‘Keys at 10. O'Malley's will then open at 10 p.m. and DJ Jones will be in the back spinning tunes until two in the morning. Don't forget to wish him a happy birthday! A benefit ride for Stacy Francis will be held at the American Legion Post 757, located at 289 Cooks Hill Road. Food and beverages will be available starting at 2 p.m. with kickstands up at 11 a.m. Stacy works at the Chillicothe VA and was recently diagnosed with cancer. If you can’t make the ride, join the event at 2 p.m. to show your support.

Looking ahead…My comedy open mic returns to Old Capitol Brewing on Thursday, Aug. 31. The laughs begin at 7:30 p.m. Comic spots are full but audience spots are all open.

Until next time. I hope to see you out and laughing.
