Officials with the Mattoon Police Department said that on Wednesday, they were contacted by Wisconsin police officers who were investigating a kidnapping in their jurisdiction. They said 31-year-old Alexander Shultz had kidnapped an adult woman and they had reason to believe they were in Mattoon.

Mattoon Police gathered further information through local resources and later found Shultz’s car on Lakeland Boulevard. After performing a traffic stop, officials said the officers found Shultz driving the car with the kidnapping victim in the passenger seat.

Shultz was taken into custody without incident for outstanding warrants from Wisconsin. He is being held at the Coles County Jail, awaiting extradition to Wisconsin on those warrants and for charges stemming from the kidnapping. Officials said they later learned Shultz is on parole for sex crimes and had cut a monitoring device off his person.

The kidnapping victim was later reunited with her family members, officials added.
