Mattress factory to close, layoff more than 150

Apr. 13—WINDSOR LOCKS — The Serta Simmons Bedding factory on D. Neil Hagan Drive is set to close this summer, the company announced this week.

According to a notice filed with the state Department of Labor, the company plans to permanently close the factory by Aug. 4, resulting in the loss of 157 jobs.

The notice states that the closure will happen over the coming months, and the last day of work for employees will be June 30.

The employees affected range from managers to truck drivers to mattress assemblers.

No union represents factory workers, so the employees do not have relocation rights. But the company said Wednesday that employees are eligible to apply for open positions at other locations and are being offered severance pay.

Following a filing for bankruptcy protection in January, the company said the factory closure is part of an effort to optimize its manufacturing facilitates, which means expanding operations in some areas and closing in others.

"We are grateful for the contributions that our Windsor Locks manufacturing team has made to SSB and are committed to supporting these associates through the transition," Serta Simmons Bedding said.

The company moved into the building in Windsor Locks in 2018, after moving from Agawam, Massachusetts. It had been occupied by American Wood Moulding. Serta was renting the building.

The move from Massachusetts to Connecticut was part of a multiyear, $100 million investment in expanded manufacturing that included the opening of plants in California, Texas, and Washington.

At the time the state Department of Economic and Community Development granted Serta Simmons an $8 million, 10-year loan at 2 percent, half of which would be forgiven if the company maintained its employment level for two years,

It was unclear today if any of the loan remains unpaid.
