Aug. 9—Sometimes, real life throws even the best-laid plans a fadeaway pitch that would make Christy Mathewson himself proud.

A planned performance of actor Eddie Frierson's "Matty," an award-winning one-man play about the life and times of the Hall of Fame pitcher and Factoryville native scheduled for Friday has been postponed, as Frierson battles an illness at home in California.

The show was originally planned as both a kickoff to the annual Christy Mathewson Day celebration thrown by the borough and Keystone College on Saturday and a celebration of Mathewson's 142nd birthday. However, the performance and the ice cream social scheduled before it will both have to wait.

David Gower, one of the event's promoters, said both Frierson and event organizers are hoping the play can be rescheduled for sometime this fall.

All Christy Mathewson Day events scheduled for Saturday are still on. That includes the Christy Mathewson Day parade on College Avenue that steps off at 4 p.m. The food, drink, live music, basket raffle and pie auction will be held from 5 to 10 p.m. at Creekside Park, and a fireworks display will be set off at dusk.
