Mavericks forward Christian Wood out at least 1 week with fractured thumb

Wood suffered left thumb injury in the Mavericks’ loss to Hawks on Wednesday night

The Dallas Mavericks will be without forward Christian Wood for at least a week, the team announced on Thursday.

Wood sustained a fractured left thumb in the second quarter of the Mavericks’ 130-122 loss to the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday night in Dallas. Wood still finished the game, but did so with tape on his thumb.

He’ll be evaluated again in a week, meaning he’ll miss at least the next four games.

Wood is averaging 18.4 points and 8.4 rebounds per game this season, which is second on the team to star Luka Doncic. Wood had 22 points and nine rebounds in the Mavericks’ loss to the Hawks, and he’s put up 21.6 points and 10.1 rebounds in their last 10 games.

Wood, 27, is in the final year of a three-year, $41 million deal he signed with the Houston Rockets. He’s worked his way into the starting lineup since landing in Dallas after beginning as their sixth man. It’s unclear if the Mavericks will sign Wood to the four-year, $77 million deal he’s eligible for.

With Wood out, the Mavericks are down to just big men JaVale McGee and Dwight Powell. Forward Maxi Kleber is still out with a hamstring injury.

The Mavericks currently sit with a 24-22 overall record, the fifth best in the Western Conference. They’ve lost three straight, and six of their last eight.
