Maxar releases satellite images showing damage to Ukrainian-controlled Bakhmut

In a Jan. 5 tweet with two images for comparison, the company said that the photos had been taken five months apart, before Aug 1, 2022, and after Jan 4, 2023.

“The city has been the focus of intense battles between Russian and Ukrainian forces for the past six months and the imagery reveals extensive damage to buildings and infrastructure,” Maxar tweeted.

Bakhmut remains one of the hottest spots on the front, with the Kremlin regime trying to take the town for more than six months. The Russian Armed Forces throw huge forces at it, despite suffering tremendous losses – but they have yet to achieve any significant progress.

Spokesperson for the Ukrainian military’s Operational Command East, Serhiy Cherevatyi, said the Russians were losing from 50 to 100 people killed and the same number wounded a day near Bakhmut.

According to Oleksandr Syrskyi, commander of the Ground Forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the Ukrainian military succeeded in thwarting the invaders’ plans to capture the town of Soledar and encircle Bakhmut in 2022, but the Russians have not given up their goal of capturing the whole of Donetsk Oblast.

UK Defense Intelligence said in a Jan. 3 update that the frequency of Russian assaults near Bakhmut has likely reduced from a peak in mid-December, and it is unlikely that Russia will achieve a significant breakthrough there in the coming weeks.

Earlier, on Dec. 28, U.S. think tank the Institute for the Study of War said the Russian offensive against Bakhmut was likely culminating. According to experts, the Russians are no longer able to achieve significant operational success on that part of the front.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited Bakhmut on Dec. 20 to meet with its Ukrainian defenders.
