The true-crime drama Maxine has become the latest awful story to grip Netflix viewers after it arrived on the streaming platform and climbed the ranking of the most popular TV shows among UK subscribers.

The three-part drama, which aired on Channel 5 last year, portrays the horrific Soham murders case in 2002. When 10-year-old best friends Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman went missing, it sparked one of the most intense searches in British criminal history, before their bodies were found 13 days later.

The drama focuses on the part Ian Huntley's girlfriend Maxine Carr, now 46, played in providing a false alibi for the school caretaker who killed the girls. Carr, who was a teaching assistant in their class and living with Huntley, lied and told police she had been with him in Soham, Cambridgeshire on the night they went missing. Carr had in fact been in Grimsby that evening and her false alibi delayed the police investigation.

The third and final episode of the drama culminates in the courtroom at the Old Bailey, as Huntley – played by Scott Reid – confesses to the murders before the jury. Carr – played by Jemma Carlton – then takes the stand as part of what was a seven-week trial.

The jury are then shown handing down a guilty verdict to Huntley for both murders. Carr was found guilty of perverting the court of justice, but not guilty of assisting Huntley.

Huntley was sentenced to two terms of life imprisonment, with a minimum of 40 years in jail. He will be eligible for parole in 2042, when he will be 68.

Carr was sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison, of which she served half before being released in May 2004. A caption in the closing moments of the drama reads: "Huntley later claimed Maxine lied about her knowledge of the crimes. Something she denied."

Another card then reads: "Upon her release from prison, Maxine Carr was given a new identity after the High Court granted a Lifetime Anonymity Order. Newspaper reports suggest she has since married and had a child."

Where is Maxine Carr now?

The last scene of Carr sees her on a beach, approached by someone off-screen who says they recognise her, before asking whether she knew Huntley had killed the girls. "No comment," she replies.

The beach setting in that last scene may be owing to the reports that Carr now lives in a seaside town, after marrying her now-husband in 2014, according to a Daily Mail report. The exact town or name of her husband cannot be revealed due to the Lifetime Anonymity Order granted to Carr following her release from Foston Hall prison in 2004.

The 46-year-old is one of just four people who have been given a new identity, which also cannot be published, due to the strength of public hatred against her for her part in the murders.

Carr reportedly gave birth to a child in 2011, but the Daily Mail reported that under the terms of her injunction, the child cannot be told the details of her mother's real identity or her part in the Soham murders.

Maxine is available to stream on Netflix.
