May 5 marked National Day of Prayer

May 6—LENOIR — Clergy, city council members, and local leaders participated in the National Day of Prayer in downtown Lenoir on Thursday, May 5.

This event occurred at three other locations in the county simultaneously, each one beginning at the stroke of noon with a reading of the prayer written by the President of the National Day of Prayer Task Force, Kathy Branzell:

"Lord, we exalt You. We are filled with awe and wonder as our praise joins the Heavenly Host, saying, holy, holy, holy is the Lord ... You are the author of our days. You have established your plans and purpose for us. We respond to your glory and authority in obedience to your word and will."

Those offering prayers included the Rev. Randy Goode, Lenoir Mayor Joe Gibbons, American Legion Post 29 District 21 Commander Wayne Mihelich (USN Retired), the Rev. Josh Hughes, Caldwell County Schools Superintendent Dr. Donald Phipps, Lenoir Councilman Rev. Ike Perkins, former Lenoir Police Sgt. Rev. James Moore, and Lenoir Police Chief Brent Phelps.

"We're very honored to have you on our square," Gibbons said. "We're very proud of this area and we enjoy when we can get together ... as we come together, I will ask you now if you will let us pray together. I will be praying for our government today. Let's pray: Our father, as people from faith, many faith expressions throughout our nation unite in prayer, we gather here in the center of our community to pray for our local state and national government leaders."
