Some may taste or smell chlorine in Jupiter's water. The town says there's good reason for it.

JUPITER — If the water coming out of your tap smells and tastes a little different — you’re not alone.

Through Sept. 12, the town’s utility department has changed how it disinfects water, part of routine maintenance on Jupiter’s water-delivery system, the town said in a news release.

The water is safe to drink, the town said.

During the work, Jupiter will disinfect water with free chlorine instead of chloramine, something done regularly by water providers to make sure the system is clear of potentially harmful bacteria.

Free chlorine is stronger than chloramine, so it can remove anything that might be more resistant to Jupiter’s routine treatments, the town said.

The temporary change began Aug. 22, giving the town about three weeks — the standard maintenance period — to perform the work. If the maintenance takes any more time, Jupiter said it will notify customers.

Customers such as dialysis centers and medical facilities that usually take precautions to remove disinfectants from water should continue to take those precautions, Jupiter said.
