DEMING – No let-up in the District 3-5A and none among the Deming High Wildcats. The ‘Cats battled tooth and nail against a physical and taller Mayfield High Trojans varsity on Tuesday at Frank Dooley Court on the campus of DHS. The ‘Cats were up to the task but fell behind in each period for a 74-54 loss.

Mayfield (9-9 and 3-1) played as the bigger and stronger team at the outset and took a 20-7 advantage through the first 8 minutes of play.

Deming (7-9 and 1-4) pestered the Trojans throughout the contest and challenged the bigger front line to match Mayfield on the offensive glass. The ‘Cats trailed 34-20 at the half.

Senior Wildcat Anthony Lopez (11) goes up and over the Mayfield defense for two of his six total points.

Junior Alex Alfaro, senior Kellen Carbajal and junior Cesar Ramirez carried the scoring load in the first half. Alfaro totaled 7, Ramirez hit for 6 and Carbajal added 5. However, there was significant play from senior Anthony Lopez, juniors Ivan Schultz, and Adrian Lopez, senior Genesis Carrillo, and sophomore Aiden Jaquez throughout the contest. Whether it be a steal, rebound, assist or tie-up, the ‘Cats matched Mayfield’s intensity – and in some spots – set a standard of hustle.

Mayfield put the game out of reach in the third period behind a 16-7 run. The Trojans would put three players in double figures and Noah Alvarez had 9. Davian Smith led the Trojans with 13 points, Cameron Sowards had 12 and Anthony Escobar added 10.

At one point in the fourth period the Trojans’ lead ballooned to 25 points but the ‘Cats fought back and actually took the final period by a 27-24 edge.

Alfaro caught fire in the final 8 minutes and pumped in 12 of his game-high 21 points. Double-doubles are becoming commonplace for Alfaro who yanked down 11 rebounds.
