Mayfield in National Finals Rodeo

Dec. 3—Shad Mayfield, who grew up in Clovis and was in rodeo events at the Curry County Event Center, is in Las Vegas, Nv. this weekend for The National Finals Rodeo (NFR).

"It's the 'Super Bowl' of rodeo," Mayfield said.

This weekend marks the fourth time Mayfield, 22, has been to the NFR.

"I won the 'World' in 2020," Mayfield said. The title came with $200,000 in prize money according to Mayfield.

His first trip to the NFR was in 2019. That year he came in thirteenth.

Last year Mayfield came in seventh.

Mayfield said this year he's going for "that gold buckle."

Mayfield said he's never been hurt in all his rodeo years.

"Being from Clovis I did a lot of little events at the Events Center," Mayfield said. "This has been a long time coming."

"This is a big deal," Ernie Kos, Executive Director of the Clovis-Curry County Chamber of Commerce said of Mayfield. "He's doing so good, I feel like this is his year."

Kos remembers rodeo has been important to the chamber and Clovis.

"The chamber used to host the High Plains Junior Rodeo," Kos said.

Kos said she remembers Shad and his sister Shelby competing in Clovis Rodeo events.
