Mayfield woman drove drunk twice within eight hours; Faces two aggravated DWI counts, troopers say

MAYFIELD — A Mayfield woman drove drunk twice in one day Friday, state police said Tuesday.

Joyce A. Epps, 31, of Mayfield, was arrested after both incidents and charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, misdemeanors, troopers said.

The incidents began at about 11:30 a.m. Friday when troopers received a report of an intoxicated woman who had driven to the Sunoco in Mayfield and then left her car, state police said.

Troopers then identified the driver, found to be Epps, at her residence in the village, state police said. She told the trooper that she had driven her car to the Sunoco and walked home, state police said.

The trooper could smell alcohol as Epps spoke, she was unable to safely perform sobriety tests and then taken into custody, state police said.

A breath sample later showed her blood alcohol content to be 0.20 percent, above the legal limit of 0.08 and the 0.18 threshold for aggravated DWI, state police said.

She was issued an appearance ticket and released to a sober third party to appear in court later, state police said.

Then, at about 7:20 p.m. that same day, state police stopped Epps for a traffic infraction after she was seen crossing into the oncoming lane as she drove on Route 30 in Mayfield, state police said.

That trooper could also smell alcohol while speaking to Epps. She again failed field sobriety tests and was arrested. A breath sample after that arrest came back ta 0.18 percent, state police said.

She was then issued a second appearance ticket and again released to a sober third party, state police said.
