New Mayo Clinic, Thermo Fisher venture to create new medical tests, local jobs

Mar. 29—Mayo Clinic and a Massachusetts-based medical technology firm recently launched a joint venture in the One Discovery Square complex.

Mayo Clinic and Thermo Fisher Scientific started a new collaboration earlier this month in Mayo's Advanced Diagnostics Laboratory at 202 Fourth St. SW.

The goal of the venture is to validate new diagnostics tests to manage a variety of medical conditions in areas such as hematology, oncology, allergy and autoimmunity. The tests will be jointly developed by Mayo Clinic and Thermo Fisher as part of the collaboration.

"By pairing cutting-edge, innovative technologies with world-class clinical and diagnostic testing knowledge, this collaboration will ensure that promising innovations are both clinically relevant and accessible globally," stated Mayo Clinic Laboratories President Dr. William Morice II in the announcement of the venture.

The collaboration, which is slated to last a number of years, is expected to create Mayo Clinic jobs, including within the Advanced Diagnostics Lab.

Mayo Clinic's Suzanne Ferguson said it is too early to estimate how many jobs will be spurred by the joint venture.

"The collaboration is brand new and evolving, but we know it will create new jobs," she wrote in response to questions.
