EAST VILLAGE, NY — Mayor Eric Adams went restaurant hopping in the East Village on Monday, ending his tour by eating vegan Borscht soup at the popular Ukrainian restaurant Veselka.

Adams was joined at his fourth East Village restaurant of the day by Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine, Councilmember Carlina Rivera, and other elected officials and small business leaders.

Adams was welcomed into the restaurant at 144 2nd Avenue by third-generation owner Jason Birchard, reported AMNY.

In the last two weeks, Veselka has raised around $25,000 for Ukrainian relief efforts through its "Eat Borscht, Stand with Ukraine" campaign, AMNY added.

Veselka is asking people who are looking to help with Ukrainian relief to drop off the following items at its East 9th Street entrance:

  • Yellow heavy-duty tape

  • AA/AAA batteries

  • Headlamps

  • Sterile saline wipes/antibacterial wipes

  • Band-aids/gauze for wounds

  • Elastic bandages and regular bandages

  • Occlusive dressing (for wounds)

  • Betadine

  • Quick meals

  • Energy bars

  • Water purification tablets

  • Small canned foods that can be easily opened

  • Individually packed nuts or cookies

  • Cotton socks

  • Men's underwear and t-shirts

  • Men's heavy-duty gloves

  • Baby diapers

  • Baby formula

Adams was also conducting the East Village restaurant tour on Monday to celebrate the end of the indoor vaccine mandate in New York City.

“We may have to do this again with COVID, but in the meantime, we can’t sit at home hoping that it doesn’t come while our city is not prospering,” Adams said outside Veselka when asked if he’s concerned that his removal of the indoor vaccine mandate could trigger a coronavirus resurgence, reported the Daily News.
