Mayor de Blasio mocks Gov. Cuomo’s denials about scandals as ‘delusional’

A day after Gov. Cuomo faced the music in person from reporters for the first time in months, Mayor de Blasio ridiculed the governor’s claim that he “didn’t do anything wrong” in a further escalation of the feud the two have engaged in for years.

Cuomo has been dogged by several scandals for months now — including the several allegations of sexual harassment against him, his handling of nursing homes during the pandemic and claims that he used government staff to help right his COVID-era memoir.

On Monday, Cuomo told reporters he had no reason to resign because he believes Attorney General Letitia James’ probe into his conduct won’t find any wrongdoing.

“The report can’t say anything different because I didn’t do anything wrong,” Cuomo said Monday.

On Tuesday, de Blasio openly mocked that statement during his morning press briefing and suggested Cuomo is delusional.

“I’m trying to remember the lyrics from the song. Is it ‘Living a Life of Illusion’? Or ‘Living a Life of Delusion’? I can’t remember exactly what it was, but that’s what we’re seeing here,” de Blasio said. “I don’t understand how he’s saying that. I think the investigation will proceed, and I absolutely assume the investigation will prove that, in fact, something very wrong happened.”

Cuomo has kept reporters at arm’s length for months by taking questions only over conference calls or virtually. On Monday, he broke from that trend and took questions in person. His response quickly drew rebukes from two of his accusers.

De Blasio — who has appeared uncharacteristically chipper since Cuomo’s troubles became public — happily piled on Tuesday as well.

His chief spokesman Bill Neidhardt gladly jumped in to help. After de Blasio made the half-cocked crack about the song lyrics Cuomo reminded him of, Neidhardt threw in a lifeline.

“I do want to say the intrepid Bill Neidhardt — always concerned to do fact-checking — handed me a note. It is, ‘Living a life of Illusion’ by Joe Walsh,” Hizzoner said, beaming. “Obviously, collaborated with the Eagles in his heyday. Thank you, Bill, for always getting the facts right.”

The governor again squared off with reporters during an appearance in Binghampton on Tuesday, defending himself and denying he ever touched anyone inappropriately.

“Have I touched people? Yes. I didn’t touch anybody inappropriately,” he said when asked about a current staffer who claims he groped her last year. “I have never touched anyone inappropriately and groping would be inappropriately.”

Dozens of Cuomo’s fellow Dems have called on him to resign as he encourages New Yorkers to await the results of James’ probe and lawmakers in the Assembly conduct an impeachment inquiry.

The governor has said he’ll have plenty more to say on the accusations leveled against him once the independent investigators working under the Attorney General issue their report.

“When I was in the Attorney General’s office, when I was an assistant district attorney, I used to say to my team, ‘Be careful when you only hear one side of the story,” he said. “I say to my daughters now, ‘Be careful when you’re on the other side of the story. You’ve only heard one side of the story.’

“I said yesterday, I haven’t done anything wrong. I said from the beginning, I haven’t done anything wrong,” he added.
