Mayor Moore: Kewanee doesn't tax gasoline or set its price

Kewanee Mayor Gary Moore said he's been getting complaints about high gas prices, even though the city doesn't control or tax fuel.

Mayor Gary Moore wants Kewaneeans to know that if gasoline costs more here than in other area towns, it’s not the city government’s fault.

At last week's City Council meeting, Moore said he had heard some local residents speculate that the higher gas prices here were due to a gasoline tax levied by the city.

But that’s not the case, the mayor said; there’s no city tax on fuel.

Moore said the price of gas isn’t set by the city. It’s not even set by the gas station owners.

“It’s the distributors who set the price,” Moore said, and he invited Kewaneeans to contact those distributors if they want to complain about gas prices.
