To honor Black History Month, mayor Quinton Lucas is going on a tour Friday, recognizing some of Kansas City’s black businesses that specialize in health and wellness. At each stop, Lucas will present them with a proclamation of gratitude for their service.

DISABLED BUT NOT REALLY

They work with the disabled community to help them achieve a physically limitless mindset that oozes courage, confidence and competence. Wesley Hamilton, the founder, recently received a $1 million donation towards his nonprofit.

THE TUF CLUB

In the same building as Disabled But Not Really is The TUF Club, where they work with clients to strengthen their physical performance. Their five pillars of health are physical, mental, emotional, financial and spiritual, which founder Jabari Washington emphasizes on everyone who comes in.

THE LAYA CENTER

Founded by LaToyia Mays and her husband, NFL veteran Joe Mays, this spa’s specialty is in chronic illness management and injury recovery. They use ancient African healing methods with Ayurvedic techniques to help.

KC IRON PIT BOXING

From ages 6 and up, KC Iron Pit Boxing focuses on in-ring technique, fitness, conditioning, critical thinking and self-development. All of those come quick to founder Ronnell Jones and he wants to make it come easy to the next generation.

MO HIVES KC

With an interest in education and urban community service, MO Hives KC helps residents with their pollinating habits. Dr. Marion Pierson, president of MO Hives KC, uses empty land to support community health and wellness.

MATTIE’S FOODS

Mattie’s Foods turns comfort food into healthy treats. Owners Arvelisha and India take traditionally unhealthy foods and replace them with plant-rich options, hoping to connect to people who aren’t sure about plant-based foods.
