Here are four of the top stories in San Diego today:

  1. Mayor Todd Gloria and mayors from several other big cities lobbied the State of California to continue funding for homelessness support programs. Cities receive funding through the Homeless Housing, Assistance, and Prevention Program (HHAP). It is one-time funding, so the governor and Legislature must vote to renew the funding. Mayors representing the 13 biggest cities in California are asking for another $1 billion each year for the next three years to support homeless programs. 2. The City Council voted to support the Stop Adolescent Addiction to Flavored E-Cigarettes (SAAFE) Act. If signed by Mayor Todd Gloria, the bill would go into effect Jan. 1, 2023. According to the FDA, approximately 2 million teens use flavored e-cigarettes. "Candy flavored tobacco products are intentionally marketed to kids, and today, the San Diego City Council took bold action to prevent the sale of these products and protect our youth,” said Councilmember Marni von Wilpert. “I thank my colleagues for standing with me to stop Big Tobacco from addicting an entire new generation of youth on tobacco products.” Some store owners are upset with the ordinance. 3. Title 42 will expire on May 23 and asylum seekers who arrive at the U.S.-Mexico border will no longer be expelled. In order to provide humanitarian protection to the refugees, both short-term and long-term solutions must be created. "San Diego County has established itself as a welcoming community for families seeking asylum," Board of Supervisors Chair Nathan Fletcher said. "Several years ago, we demonstrated our ability to work with local partners, stand-up a shelter, provide services and help families make connections to their sponsors; and it is important we are prepared to provide humane support for families coming to San Diego." From my notebook:

  • San Diego Police Department: "Southern Division officers received a call of a man who threatened others with a machete. When officers arrived, they quickly learned the man might be experiencing a mental health emergency. He wasn’t cooperative with us and still had the machete on him. As more officers and resources arrived, we had time on our side. The man was in a contained area. We slowed everything down to develop a plan to take him into custody safely." (Facebook)

  • San Diego Humane Society: "Are you looking to add a special furiend to the family, but haven't found 'the one' just yet at our shelter? Check out our new Pets Being Rehomed webpage to see even more adoptable animals! We've partnered with Rehome by Adopt-a-Pet.com and Home To Home™ to help connect potential adopters with current pet owners who aren't able to keep their animals." (Facebook)

  • San Diego Botanic Garden: "With World of Orchids only a few weeks away, we are excited to showcase stunning designs featuring impressive specimens, locally-bred hybrids, and rare species displayed in unique and unexpected ways. In addition to the many orchids that already grow in the conservatory’s 'plant chandeliers,' displays will include plants on loan from private growers including members of San Diego County and Palomar Orchid Societies, as well as plants and materials sourced from local businesses." (Facebook)

  • City of San Diego: "Starting tonight, April 25, overnight construction is scheduled on Businesspark Avenue south of Old Grove Road, Mondays through Thursdays, 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. For the safety of the community and construction crews, traffic control will be in place." (Facebook)

  • Library Foundation SD: "🚨 CALL TO ACTION 🚨 Last week, Mayor Todd Gloria proposed a library-friendly budget. 📖 We'd like to thank the mayor for halting the city's historical trend of divesting funds from its library system. We'd also like to thank the City Council for their unanimous support of additional library investments, especially in communities most often neglected." (Facebook)

  • Downtown San Diego Partnership: "The New Children's Museum's new theatre installation, Teatro Piñata by @designreynoso and Optika Moderna takes center stage when it comes to play and exploration.
