Floyd Mayweather makes a swift return to the ring as he takes on YouTube star Deji this evening, within two months of the boxing icon’s last outing.

Mayweather, who held world titles in numerous weight-classes in a glistening in-ring career, retired unbeaten in 2017 with a late TKO win against former UFC champion Conor McGregor. Since then, the American, 45, has competed exclusively in exhibition contests, stopping kickboxing star Tenshin Nasukawa in 2018 and mixed martial artist Mikuru Asakura this September, and going the distance with YouTuber Logan Paul last year and fellow ex-boxer Don Moore this May.

Briton Deji (real name Oladeji Olatunji) holds a losing boxing record but recently secured his first win, stopping fellow YouTuber Fousey in August. The 25-year-old will be out of his depth in Dubai but will look to make the most of the opportunity to box arguably the greatest fighter to ever grace the sport. On the undercard, Tommy Fury – half-brother of heavyweight boxing champion Tyson – takes on Rolly Lambert in an exhibition bout, after the Briton’s scheduled pro clash with Paul Bamba fell through eight hours before it was set to take place.

Fury and Lambert clinch and move to the ropes, where Lambert taps Fury on the back, and the Briton lets him go. Fury is boxing on the outside, using his jab and left hook to decent effect. Once more the fighters clinch on the ropes. Lambert is looking to close range quickly, and Fury is pivoting to evade but doing so somewhat over-eagerly; he’s putting himself off balance.

“You f***ing suck,” Jake Paul shouts at Fury from the commentary position. Fury and Lambert briefly clinch. Fury lands a sharp jab. He bounces around at range. Lambert gets frustrated at the Briton for not engaging, then Fury leaps forward and almost catches out the Cameroonian. Lambert connects with a straight left hand as he backs up Fury against the ropes.

We get a bit of grappling now, as Lambert has Fury in a headlock in the corner. The pair are separated, and Lambert finds some success with his jab. More showboating from Fury at a distance – odd.

Now Lambert comes forward. Both men are pawing with their lead hands, Lambert standing southpaw. Fury is briefly cornered, but Lambert lets the Briton get free. Some showboating from both fighters, but still plenty of respect. There’s not a lot of time to work in these two-minute rounds, as we see in women’s boxing, but the showboating is a bit of a time-wasting endeavour.

Fury jabs to the body; Lambert jabs to the head. Fury is fighting on the front foot. Lots of feinting from the Briton, but he’s caught with a clean, straight punch. Decent counter left hook from Fury, who then showboats slightly with some skipping.
