Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. After a year of record-breaking emergency calls, the Myrtle Beach Fire Department is urging community members to learn CPR. The department responded to over 15,000 calls in 2021, most of them medical issues. In many cases, bystanders who know what to do can help keep someone alive until first responders arrive. To find out about CPR training, send an email to MBFR@cityofmyrtlebeach.com. (WMBF)

  2. Horry County Fire Rescue reports that the necessity to administer Narcan during emergency calls is on the rise, and hasn't let up for a few years. The number of Narcan doses administered in 2021 nearly doubled the number given in Horry County during 2018. Nicole Criss, executive director of addiction recovery organization Favor Grand Strand, says the huge influx of fentanyl on the streets along with the pandemic contributed to the alarming trend of opioid overdoses seen in the county. 3. Myrtle Beach police have arrested a second person in the November 23, 2021 prostitution and robbery case. Carissa Kaitlyn Atkins, 30, was charged with a third offense of prostitution as well as attempted armed robbery. She is being held in Myrtle Beach jail without bond. Another person, Nicholas Daniel Benson, was arrested previously and charged with armed robbery, kidnapping, burglary, and other charges connected to the case. (WBTW)

  4. February is Valentine's Day month, and American Heart Month. The Myrtle Beach SkyWheel is lighting up all in red every Friday in February to bring awareness to heart health. Heart disease is treatable and preventable, but continues to be the leading cause of death in the United States. (WBTW)

  5. On Thursday, Habitat for Humanity of Horry County and the Myrtle Beach City Council held a workshop about workforce housing programs in the city. The council was advised to come up with ways to create affordable housing options for workers in the city. There is a lack of housing options for the city's 40,000 employees, many of whom do not live nearby and have to commute into the city for their jobs. (WMBF)

  • A mom and daughter walking right here in North Myrtle Beach saw quite the sight — a common Atlantic octopus! The brightly colored creature happily swam away as seen in video posted by the SC Department of Natural Resources. The species is common to our area, but not usually seen near the shoreline. • A daily COVID-19 stats "snapshot" for February, 2022 was released by SCDHEC this week. The number of cases, positivity percentage rates, and deaths are listed for each day of the month up to Friday, February 4th. The article here also has links to places participating in distributing free N95 masks as per the federal government program to distribute 400 million masks nationwide. (WPDE)

  • Community Services Officer Stephen Murphy, City of North Myrtle Beach Police Department: "Homeless Population - Good afternoon neighbors. I want to take a second to talk about the homeless population in North Myrtle Beach. One of my primary concerns in the City as community services is homeless outreach. Please keep in mind just because someone may look or considered to be "homeless" they have just much as right to public property as you or I during normal open hours. There are several programs throughout the area where food, shelter, and options for our homeless population can find help, provided they want the help in the first place. I work a lot with our homeless population, especially in McLean Park, and I am happy to have a constructive conversation with anyone. My email is sdmurphy@nmb.us, please feel free to email me. About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
