In efforts to combat crime in the Jackson area and free up Jackson Police officers, Gov. Tate Reeves in July 2021 expanded the territory covered by Jackson's Capitol Police and hired additional Capitol Police officers bringing the total number from 81 to 105.

Mississippi Capitol Police officers now operate in the Capitol Complex Improvement District that includes downtown Jackson from I-55 and the capitol building to Jackson State University, Fondren and the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

MBI said that upon completing their investigation, officials will share their findings with the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office.

The first three recent Capitol Police officer-involved shootings occurred July 9, July 25 and Aug. 14 according to MBI documents. All three previous shooting are also under investigation.
