MBTA fare changes go into effect Friday

A reminder for MBTA riders. Some fare changes approved back in March go into effect on Friday.

The T says the changes include lowering the cost of the 1-Day LinkPass, expanding transfers, and new options for “reduced fare riders.”

Reduced fare riders” include people between the ages of 18-25 with low income, riders with disabilities, people 65 and older, and some middle and high school-age students.

The cost of the 1-Day LinkPass will be lowered from $12.75 to $11, effective Friday.

“An $11 LinkPass pays for itself with five subway rides taken in 24 hours,” says the MBTA.

As for the expansion of transfers, the MBTA says that currently, riders are only allowed one transfer between bus and/or subway with the exception of CharlieCard riders can already transfer from bus to subway to bus.

“To simplify complexities in the T’s transfer policy, the transfer process will be standardized to allow all combinations of second transfers involving Buses, Express Bus Routes, and/or Subway, including Bus-Bus-Subway, Subway-Bus-Bus, and Express Bus-Express Bus,” said the T.

The T is also rolling out new options for its reduced fare riders.

The T said the changes, listed below, “aim to improve equity by closing gaps in existing fare structures for reduced rare riders.”

A 7-Day LinkPass for Reduced Fare Riders: A new 7-Day LinkPass for reduced fare riders will be available for $10, “which breaks even after nine subway rides,” according to the T. “This product is designed to meet the needs of individuals who might not have enough cash on-hand to afford a monthly pass, but who qualify for reduced rare programs.”

Monthly Passes for Reduced Fare Riders on Commuter Rail, Ferry, and Express BusThe T will now be offering monthly passes on the Commuter Rail, Ferry, and Express Bus at approximately 50% off the full fare pass prices.

Expanded use of LinkPass for Reduced Fare Riders on Commuter Rail Zone 1A and the Inner Harbor FerryThe LinkPass for Reduced Fare Riders now will be available on a CharlieTicket and valid for Commuter Rail travel in Zone 1A and on the Charlestown Ferry.
