House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy said Saturday he plans to hold a hearing where he will call for testimony from the 51 intel agents who signed a letter calling the Hunter Biden laptop story Russian disinformation.

McCarthy said during an appearance on Fox News that it is “egregious what we’re finding” about the censorship of the story from the “Twitter files” and also criticized members of the intelligence community who downplayed the story.

“Those 51 intel agents that signed a letter that said the Hunter Biden information was all wrong — was Russia collusion — many of them have a security clearance.”

“Why did they sign it?” he asked. “Why did they lie to the American public? A Clapper, a Brennan? Why did you use the reputation that America was able to give to you more information, but use it for a political purpose and lie to the American public?”

Meanwhile, an installment of the “Twitter files” by journalist Matt Taibbi on Friday revealed Twitter’s former head of safety Yoel Roth was seemingly meeting with the FBI on a weekly basis around the 2020 election.

Taibbi shared a screenshot of Slack messages from after the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021, in which Roth jokingly says a time block on his calendar is “DEFINITELY not a meeting with the FBI I SWEAR.”

Roth also cites a “weekly sync with FBI/DHS/DNI” in a separate set of messages and a “report from the FBI concerning 2 tweets” in another. The tweets apparently related to false claims about fraud in the 2020 election.

McCarthy said Saturday he plans to investigate whether Facebook and Google worked to suppress information.

McCarthy’s comments come as Republicans are set to retake the House majority in the new year. The House will meet on January 3 to choose its next speaker. At least five Republicans have said they will not support McCarthy’s bid for speaker. The detractors claim they have at least 20 other members who will join their opposition to McCarthy.
