House Speaker Kevin McCarthy says he stands by his decision to pass a bill to avert a government shutdown with the help of Democrats, despite the challenge to his speakership. McCarthy said the House will vote Tuesday afternoon on whether he will remain speaker after Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz introduced a motion "declaring the office of Speaker of the House of Representatives to be vacant" on Monday night.
