MCCC awards several scholarships

The Foundation at Monroe County Community College has awarded several scholarships.

• The $2,650 Guire Scholarship was awarded to Daniel Spain of Monroe. Spain earned a GED in 2020 in Arizona. He will pursue an Associate of Science degree. He is a member of the Care Closet, the Psychology Interest Group and the Gender Sexuality Alliance at MCCC. He has volunteered at Philadelphia House and is as a math tutor at the Learning Bank. He is the son of the late Paulette Jackson and Kevin Spain.

• The $2,450 FEDCO Science and Technology Scholarship was awarded to Elayn Juhasz and Bradford Zapor.

Juhasz of Monroe received a GED from El Cajon Valley High School in California in 1988. She is studying mechanical design technology and is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. She also is active in the drama club at MCCC and performs in a charitable dancing group. She is the wife of Mark Juhasz and mother to Sophia and Anthony.

Zapor of Monroe is a 2000 graduate of Jefferson High School. He is studying mechanical design technology. He is the son of Mary Zapor.

• The $2,350 Joyce Hoagland Eby Scholarship was awarded to Lauren Pier of Carleton, a 2016 graduate of Airport High School. She is studying nursing. Pier is a volunteer with 4-H, Habitat for Humanity, Veterans of Foreign Wars in Flat Rock and her church. She earned certified nurse assistant and licensed practical nurse credentials. She is the daughter of Todd Pier and Ginger Pier.

• The $2,000 John “Corky” Hancock Scholarship was awarded to James Brown of Blissfield, a 2021 graduate of Blissfield High School. He is studying automotive service technology. In addition to being employed full-time and assisting with the care of his now-deceased grandmother, James has volunteered with voter registration efforts locally. He is the son of Jered Brown and Casandra Brown.

• The $2,150 Eugene and Helen Beach Nursing/Respiratory Therapy Scholarship was awarded to Alex Craig, Lori DeClercq, Kimberly Jennings, Andi Martin, Drew Warner and Abigail Weber.

Craig of Riverview is a 2010 Southgate Anderson High School graduate. He is pursuing a degree in nursing and is a member and treasurer of the Student Nurses Association. He also is a foster parent, former board treasurer for a multicounty nonprofit organization and is a member of the National Guard. He is married to Alexis Craig and is the father to William, Emily, April, Henry and Carlito.

DeClercq of Carleton is a 1988 Airport High School graduate. She is pursuing a degree in nursing and is a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and the Student Nurses Association. She volunteers for various projects at DMC Children’s Hospital, ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital and Corewell Beaumont Trenton, where she won an award for a program recognizing the needs of veterans as patients. She is the mother of Anna DeClercq.

Jennings of Southgate received a GED in 1989. She is pursuing a degree in nursing and is a member of the Student Nurses Association. She has volunteered for a number of health-related causes and activities with the elderly and children in the community, animal rescue and foster care and worked as a respiratory therapist. She is the mother of Michael and Eric Marshall and the daughter of Kathleen Jennings and James Jennings.

Martin of Dundee is a 2018 Monroe High School graduate. She is pursuing a degree in nursing and is a member of the Student Nurses Association. She is the daughter of Angela Cunningham and Lawrence Martin.

Warner of Monroe is a 2018 Ida High School graduate. She is pursuing a degree in nursing. She was active in IHS Student Council and other activities. At Eastern Michigan University she was a member of National Society of Leadership and Success and was a new student orientation assistant. She volunteered at an area hospital for three years and is a member of MCCC’s Student Nurses Association. She is the daughter of Dawn Adkins and Seth Adkins and is married to Caleb Warner.

Weber of Dundee is a 2016 Ida High School graduate. She is pursuing a degree in nursing and is a member of Alpha Delta Nu Nursing Society and the Student Nurses Association. She is engaged to Noah Szabo.
