James is a native Detroiter and third-generation storyteller who enjoys helping others to find their voice and express themselves. She is the program manager in the Department of Afro-American and African Studies (DAAS) at the University of Michigan.

“Let's discover some of the ways we can lift our voices to create a more open and inclusive way of understanding one another better. As the philosopher and activist Grace Lee Boggs wrote, ‘Another world is possible,’” James said. “Marginalized people have many stories that deserve to be added to the tapestry of American history. The more voices we empower and uplift, the more we discover how we are in the words of the great poet Maya Angelou ‘more alike than unalike.’ Honoring our authentic voices is crucial when we are bombarded by so much misinformation that separates us.”
