McCready family holds 100th reunion

Family gathered for the 100th McCready Reunion, Sunday, Sept. 18, at Kendig Field in Hayesville. The day started as usual with a potluck meal in the Shelter House.

Bill Gebhart conducted the business meeting where it was decided the same officers will be retained for next year's reunion. They are: Gebhart, president; and Karen McCready, secretary. The reunion will be Sunday, Sept. 24, next year.

Emcee Karen McCready paid tribute to relatives who have gone before from the 1700s through this year.

Robert McCready was born in Scotland in 1752. "The Robert McCready Family," copyright 1931, and "The McCready Family Information," copyright 2006, are suggested family resources.

Ron Smith told about Thomas Smith, 20, and wife, 17, who traveled from Pennsylvania to Ashland County by horse and wagon. It took seven days to travel 180 miles on Indian trails. He built the house where Ron and Suzanne have lived for 63 years.

Carolyn Wagner read the minutes from the first reunion, Sept. 2, 1920. The reunion was postponed two years because of COVID-19.

Ron Smith and Carolyn Wagner displayed and told about family history items. Some date to the Civil War.

Special recognition was given to veterans — those who =served or are serving in the military: Bill, Jeff and Warren Gebhart, Jim Houghton, Jim Slater, Mike McKinley, Jordan Jacquet, Sean Paisley.

Eleven people 80 years and older were recognized. One group received gold dollars and the other group received $2 bills. Children, 10 years or younger, received bubble bottles and a coin.

Jim Houghton, from Port Charlotte, Florida, and Rod and Sarah Lee Boyd, Mt. Carmel, Tennessee, received gift cards for gasoline for traveling to Ohio.

Bonnie and Sean Paisley presented special vocal music.

Shirley Slater and Karen McCready did comedy routines involving dressing a chicken and other cooking tips. Barb Ostrander, Hannah Eady, Shirley Slater, Bonnie Paisley, Brenda Martin, Jill Eady and Lisa Rambo participated by giving silly answers to silly questions involving chickens.

Door prizes were provided by Jesse Raubenolt, Suzanne Smith, Ostrander family, Shirley Slater, Jill Eady, Chelsea Boyd, McCready Interiors, family of John Boyd and Karen McCready.

Refreshments, including cupcakes baked by Amber Bennett, were enjoyed as people visited.
