McDade Park pool reopening remains on track

Jan. 25—Just one company submitted a bid to renovate the swimming pool complex at McDade Park and install a splash pad, but the bid raised hopes the facility reopens this summer.

"I'm very happy we did get a bid, because we all know what would happen if we didn't," Lackawanna County Economic Development Director Brenda Sacco said Wednesday. The lack of a bid could have delayed the opening.

D&M Construction Unlimited of Dalton bid $2.637 million for the job, which entails tearing down existing buildings that house pool filtering equipment and bathrooms, building new ones, preparing land for the splash pad and upgrading the leaky existing pool. County officials opened the bid Wednesday afternoon. Sacco said a county engineer will review D&M's bid to ensure it's complete and meets bidding requirements.

"It is in line with what we have estimated," she said.

She hopes to have all reviews complete so the county commissioners can award a contract Feb. 15.

"Because I want to get started," Sacco said.

She has set a July 1 target date for opening. The pool last opened in 2019. The COVID-19 pandemic closed the facility, then officials discovered the pool was in lousy condition. The county already acquired the splash pad equipment through a state contract and hoped to have that open last summer, but that bid came in too high.
