McKay athlete, Silverton boys, Blanchet girls shine at track and field districts
McKay High School's Stephanie Urenda had quite a meet in the final Mountain Valley Conference track and field championships.
With the Royal Scots hosting, the senior Urenda won the 400 meters and the long jump titles to help the McKay girls team finish tied for fifth.
Summit swept the girls and boys team championships, and West Salem was second in both.
The Titans had three individual girls' champions — sophomore Olivia Jolivette in the 100 meters, senior Natalie Cunningham in the shot put and senior Alison Calvin-Stupfel in the high jump. They also had three individual boys champions — sophomore Mihaly Akpamgbo in the 100 meters, senior Tyce Chaney in the 400 meters and junior Brady Bliven in the 800 meters.
At the Class 5A level, the Silverton boys team won the Mid-Willamette Conference championship, and Corvallis won the girls team title.
Individually, North Salem junior Jordan Koskondy won conference titles in 100 meters, 100-meter hurdles, 300-meter hurdles and shot put. She has the top times in the state in the 100-meter hurdles (14.88) and 300-meter hurdles (45.30).
North Salem sophomore DeMari Thompson won conference titles in the 100 meters and 200 meters. He has the top times in the state in both the 100 meters (10.90) and 200 meters (22.59).
At the Class 3A level, the Blanchet girls team won the District 2 championship, and Santiam Christian won the boys' team title.
Individually, Willamina junior Hallee Hughes won titles in the shot put, discus and javelin. Heading into the state championships, Hughes has the state’s best marks in the discus (137-0) and javelin (148-1).
The OSAA track and field state championships will be held at Hayward Field in Eugene, with Classes 3A, 2A and 1A set for Thursday and Friday, and Classes 6A, 5A and 4A set for Friday and Saturday.
