MCSO: Man charged after firing shot at deputies during Wednesday chase

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — The Madison County Sheriff’s Office has identified the man involved in a police chase that ended near Hobbs Island Road Wednesday afternoon.

According to MSCO, Robert James Cameron Vanvoorhis has been charged with attempted murder, attempting to elude a police officer, felon in possession of a gun and buying/receiving stolen property. The female also involved in the chase was not charged.

MCSO said the chase began when deputies attempted to stop a vehicle with a switched tag near Kings Inn, south of Weatherly Road on South Memorial Parkway.

Chief Deputy Stacy Bates said shortly after the chase started, a shot was fired from the vehicle at a deputy.

Bates said that after about a 10-minute chase, both suspects bailed out of the vehicle near Hobbs Island Road. He added that about 30 minutes later, the man was taken into custody.

Officials said no officers or deputies were injured in the incident. No shots were fired by law enforcement, Bates said.
