McWane Ductile honored by Ohio EPA for environmental stewardship

COLUMBUS − The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency has awarded 48 businesses and organizations for going above and beyond to protect Ohio’s environment and continuing to show their commitment to environmental stewardship. This includes McWane Ductile of Coshocton.

Ohio EPA’s Encouraging Environmental Excellence (E3) program recognizes businesses and organizations through four levels of recognition: achievement, silver, gold and platinum. The Encouraging Environmental Excellence in Communities (E3C) program recognizes local governments and communities, which can work toward three levels of recognition: achievement, silver and gold. The Encouraging Environmental Excellence in Education (E4) program recognizes kindergarten to 12th grade public and private schools, which also work through three levels of recognition: root, branch and leaf.

McWane Ductile received an E3 silver award for encouraging innovation by hosting a contest consisting of teams from the McWane family of companies for the best pollution prevention ideas. The results of this contest have generated significant savings company wide. In addition, they have implemented energy efficiency upgrades at their facility. This includes purchasing regenerative burners, installing LED lighting and using variable efficiency drives.

The firm produces ductile iron piping used in underground infrastructure and utility poles in demand for hazard prone areas, such as those devastated by wildfires and hurricanes.

According to a 2019 story with the Tribune, McWane had about 500 employees with the majority in the pipe making division. The company last invested $17.5 million locally in 2017 to expand pipe finishing. In July 2022, it was announced the plant was working on an expansion to create 50 new full-time jobs at a total investment of $45 million.

Earlier this year, McWane donated $500,000 for creation of a multi-use path in partnership with Coshocton County Commissioners. A dedication for the McWane River Walk will be at 3:30 p.m. Sept. 28, at Skip's Landing on County Road 1A.
