New basketball court could come to east Charlotte after pickleball controversy

East Charlotte neighbors may get a new basketball court after the county converted an existing court into a space for pickleball.

The Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation director said neighbors put tape on the Sheffield Park tennis court to mark pickleball lines, which they viewed as demand for the sport.

That led to the decision to convert the basketball court into a pickleball court.

The director said they feared that restriping the tennis court with pickleball lines would create conflict with tennis players.

The move to convert the basketball court instead of the tennis court has also been met with backlash, so the director said there will be a community meeting to determine whether residents want a new basketball court in the park.
