Meck County Sheriff’s Office hands out free gun locks

The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office promoted gun safety on Saturday.

Deputies handed out more than a dozen gun locks at Carolina Sports Arms on South Boulevard.

The gunlocks are meant to help families avoid accidental shootings where guns might be left unattended.

“I know people who have gotten their guns stolen, I know people who have kids who play with guns,” said shopper Najee Malloy. “In my mind, gun locks are just smart, so I see nothing wrong with that.”

The event comes after North Carolina state lawmakers recently made it easier to buy a handgun. You no longer need a pistol purchase permit from the sheriff’s office. The new state law passed after legislators overruled a veto from the governor.

Buyers at gun shows or shops will still need to pass a federal background check.
