Mecklenburg County leaders approve sending used police body armor to help Ukraine

Thirty sets of ballistic body armor that aren’t being used by the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office anymore could soon find new purpose in Ukraine.

Mecklenburg County commissioners voted, 6-3, Wednesday night on a resolution to allow the county to donate the old ballistic vests to Samaritan’s Purse, a nonprofit organization.

The group plans to ship those vests to Ukraine to help citizens in the ongoing conflict with Russia.

County commissioners say the vests aren’t being used by the sheriff’s office anymore due to their age. North Carolina law states that “obsolete property may be conveyed without monetary consideration to a non-profit.”

The commissioners say the donation could save lives.
