MedExpress location on Don Knotts Boulevard closing June 3

Jun. 3—MORGANTOWN — Today is the last day patients can visit the MedExpress location at 215 Don Knotts Blvd.

Dan Neely, vice president of operations, announced the closure in an email Tuesday.

MedExpress operates multiple locations in Morgantown and "to optimize resources and ensure we are delivering on our patient-focused promise " some operations are being consolidated, the email states.

The email goes on to say care is still available at the company's Suncrest location at 956 Maple Drive and mentions MedExpress locations are open 8a.m.-8p.m. with no appointment needed.

The closure means there are no urgent care centers on the south side of Morgantown. Mon Health System operates urgent care centers in Westover, on Fort Pierpont Drive and on its Morgantown campus. West Virginia University Medicine has an urgent care center in the Suncrest Towne Centre.

The Dominion Post reached out to MedExpress' communications coordinator for comment.

A spokesperson said, "MedExpress made a very difficult decision to close its Morgantown location on Don Knotts Boulevard. The center's last day of caring for patients will be [today ] June 3. We want to thank the providers and staff for their commitment to their patients. It is never an easy decision to close a center, and we value the contributions that the team has made to delivering exceptional care. Individuals can continue to seek care from MedExpress at our nearby Morgantown center located at 956 Maple Drive in Suncrest."

It is not clear how many jobs are being lost as a result of a closure. In response to that question, the spokesperson said, "We encourage team members to apply for open positions within the organization that align with their interests and skills. We hope to place as many team members as possible in other internal opportunities."

MedExpress was started with a single Wharf District office in Morgantown in 2001 by Dr. Frank Alderman, who was raised in White Sulphur Springs. In April 2105, Optum bought MedExpress, which had 141 centers in 11 states and five worksite-based clinics in two states.

According to the MedExpress website, there are more than 175 locations and 190 COVID-19 testing centers.
