San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has a torn elbow ligament and will miss six months, according to ESPN NFL reporter Adam Schefter.
Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network also reported that Purdy, a former Iowa State star, has a complete tear of his ulnar collateral ligament and will miss six months.

#49ers QB Brock Purdy suffered a complete tear of the UCL in his throwing elbow and will undergo surgery, per sources.
Purdy is getting second opinions, but the initial hope is he can undergo a repair — not reconstruction (AKA Tommy John) — and will be ready for training camp. pic.twitter.com/dFGQGpPALw— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) January 30, 2023
Purdy’s incredible late-season surge came to a disappointing end Sunday as the former Iowa State quarterback was injured early in the San Francisco 49ers’ 31-7 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC title game.
Purdy suffered an elbow injury on San Francisco’s opening drive and had to leave the game. He finished just 4-for-4 passing for 23 yards, and returned late only after backup quarterback Josh Johnson suffered a concussion in the third quarter. By that point, though, Purdy could barely throw the ball farther than a few yards.

Purdy made an improbable rise this season, going from the last player picked in the NFL draft to opening the season as San Francisco’s third-string QB. But injuries to Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo pressed Purdy into service.
Purdy was the third rookie quarterback ever to win two NFL playoff starts, the fifth to reach the conference title game as a starter and was trying to become the first to reach the Super Bowl. Purdy won his first seven games as an NFL starter.
If indeed Brock Purdy can have the UCL repaired and avoid Tommy John, the standard timeline for return is 6 months, giving him a chance to be ready right around the start of camp. https://t.co/uxmZh2dc8y

“My arm felt like it stretched out, a lot of shocks all over from my elbow down to my wrist, front and back, pain all over,” Purdy said after Sunday's loss to Philadelphia. “I couldn’t throw more than 5, 10 yards.”
Purdy, the seventh-round pick from Iowa State, was outstanding after stepping into the lineup in December. He threw for 1,374 yards, 13 TDs and four interceptions in the regular season and became a finalist for AP Offensive Rookie of the Year.
There are multiple ways to fix a torn UCL. A repair (attaching the ligament back to bone / sewing it together) has a 6 month recovery. A full on reconstruction (replacing the ligament, aka Tommy John) is usually 9-12 months. Tough news for Brock Purdy.

Purdy completed both of his passes before Reddick drilled his right arm on a play that was ruled a fumble. The Eagles recovered the fumble and the injury proved to be a game-changer.
“It sucks. Wish we had another shot at it with everybody, but that’s life, that’s the way it goes,” said 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey, who had a package of plays to play QB if Purdy didn’t go back in.
