Mediapolis School District superintendent Greg Ray has announced he is retiring at the end of the 2022-23 school year and the search for his replacement has begun.

Ray made the announcement at the Mediapolis School Board meeting on Sept. 14.

In response to Ray's announcement, board president Toni Coates wrote: "The board would like to congratulate Greg Ray on his upcoming retirement in June 2023 and thank him for his many years of dedication and service to the Mediapolis school. We have some big shoes to fill."

Ray has served as superintendent since July 2010. Before his time in Mediapolis, Ray served as superintendent for the WACO Community School District in Wayland for two years.

Ray told The Hawk Eye that he doesn't have any solid plans for his retirement yet, but that he is looking forward to spending more time with his wife and family, as well as pursuing personal interests.

During a special meeting Monday evening, the board approved the hiring of Grundmeyer Leader Services to help the district find Ray's successor.

Recently, Grundmeyer assisted the Burlington School District with its hiring of superintendent Robert Scott, who replaced Pat Coen after his retirement in July.

Grundmeyer also assisted the Danville School District with the hiring superintendent Patrick Wallace to replace Thomas Ward, who left the district in July to take a position with the Louisiana R-II School District in is hometown of Louisiana, Missouri.

"A superintendent search is expected to take many months and we will keep everyone updated on the progress, and the community will play a role in the process," Coates wrote in her statement. "Stay tuned."
