Police officers close off access to the Kilbourn Avenue Bridge after a 77-year-old man was found dead on the bridge Monday afternoon.

A 77-year-old Rhode Island man died as the Kilbourn Avenue Bridge was being raised Monday in Milwaukee, police said.

The man was walking across the bridge when it began to raise, police said. He fell and suffered fatal injuries.

The man, a Providence, Rhode Island, resident, fell just after noon on Monday.

The bascule bridge, which has two halves and raises in the middle, apparently caused the man to fall backward onto the concrete on the east half, those at the scene said.

Two landscape workers outside the Marcus Performing Arts Center, steps away from the bridge, said they were taking their lunch when they saw a police car arrive.

The officer began CPR before paramedics arrived and used a defibrillator on the man. The bridge was up as they tried to revive the man, landscaper José Galban said. He did not wake up.

The road was closed for a time as police investigated the scene, but it was reopened by 4 p.m.
