Medicare enrollment for 2024 ends today, December 7. Here's what you need to know

Today is the last day of open enrollment for 2024 Medicare. Don't worry, though, you still have time.

Here is some critical information if you are late to the game and still need to enroll or change your coverage.

When was open enrollment for Medicare?

The open enrollment period began on Oct. 15 and ends on Dec. 7.

What is Medicare?

There are three types of Medicare, with the most basic or original plan giving you access to any doctor or hospital that takes Medicare nationwide. Typically, this plan doesn't require a referall to see a specialist. There are three parts, but it can be confusing.

Parts A & B are included in Medicare, while Part D is an optional drug plan.

Medicare Part A

Medicare Part A covers inpatient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, and some home health care.

Medicare Part B

Medicare Part B covers certain doctors' services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services. In 2024, the standard monthly premium for Medicare Part B enrollees will be $174.70, with an annual deductible of $240.

Medicare Part D

Medicare Part D is an optional, separate prescription drug plan that you must choose and pay for as soon as you start receiving Medicare. If you wait, you may have to pay more.

You can also buy additional coverage, called Medigap, from a private insurer within six months of having Medicare Part B if you’re 65 or older. This coverage helps pay your out-of-pocket costs in Original Medicare (like your 20% coinsurance). The supplement is a one-time enrollment, and if you don’t buy it within this window, you may not be able to add it later, or you'll have to pay more for it.

If you are eligible for Medicare, take time to research your options and ensure you select the plan that best meets your personal health and financial needs.

What is Medicare Advantage?

Medicare Advantage, also known as Part C, is a “bundled” plan that includes Part A, Part B, and usually Part D, and is administered by private insurers. Enrollees must pay the monthly Part B premium plus any plan premium.

You may have lower out-of-pocket costs and receive eye, dental, hearing, gym services but you must see doctors within the plan’s network, may have to get referrals for specialists that can delay your care, and pay more for out-of-network services.
