This column is part of the Times Record News Worth the Drive series. Quanah is approximately one hour and 12 minutes north west of Wichita Falls.

Drive northwest on 287 and see one of the most amazing parts of Texas.

Quanah sits on the Rolling Plains red rock ledges and is rich with the history of Texas, the Comanche tribe and breathtaking views of its heroically protected natural environment.

Lunch at Medicine Mound Depot Restaurant was a treat after visiting Copper Breaks State Park. I had the chicken quesadillas as they should be with grilled onion and green bell pepper, beans on the side. My buddy had the bacon cheddar burger with fries.

It was delicious and were only sorry we didn’t have time for peach cobbler, cheesecake or bread pudding. Or didn’t order the lemon chicken, chicken-fried steak or fried fish.

If you come to Medicine Mound Depot at peak times, be patient. Like many restaurants it’s short staffed and everyone is working tirelessly to keep customers happy. Good as the food is, it’s worth the wait.

We’ll have to go back for Holy Smokes BBQ; it comes highly recommended.
