Dayton Police Sgt. Gordon Cairns said at this point in the investigation it appears the crash happened after a maroon HHR ran a red light and struck the cruiser, causing it to spin and flip onto its top.

The officer was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Cairns said. The driver of the HHR was uninjured.

News Center 7 spoke to a witness who saw the crash as it happened. He said he was surprised no one was hurt.

“Oh, terrible, terrible,” said Hector Contreras.

It was nothing like he had ever seen before.

“It looked like a movie, like it looked like the movie you see this happen if somebody had a camera they put this video on television and it would be an attraction because it looked like a movie,” Contreras said.

Cairns said the driver of the HHR was an elderly man was given a citation for running a red light.
