Medina man accused of aggravated burglary, assault back in jail while awaiting trial

ASHLAND – A Medina man accused of pointing a gun at a woman and assaulting her is back in custody while awaiting trial on several felony charges.

According to a 911 call made by the woman, Luke Downing, 28, arrived at her Sullivan Township home Oct. 3 with a 20 gauge shotgun and a handgun.

"He (Downing) is out of his mind," the caller says. "He's pointing guns at me and he hit me in the face. ... He won't leave. He's refusing to leave and he's freaking out."

About eight minutes into the call, the woman begins asking Downing for her keys, and he refuses. After which, the caller tells the dispatcher Downing pointed a gun toward his head.

The woman is urged to leave the house and head toward the roadway where an Ashland County Sheriff's Office deputy is waiting.

After the woman met with deputies, sheriff's officials saw Downing was trying to get into his truck, according to the incident report. They said Downing went back into the woman's house and barricaded himself away from deputies.

He eventually was taken into custody and transported to the Ashland County Jail, according to the sheriff's report.

Downing was indicted Oct. 15 by an Ashland County grand jury on eight charges, included two counts of aggravated burglary. He also faces counts of tampering with evidence and having weapons while under disability as he was not allowed to have a firearm due to a previous felony conviction.

Downing's bond was set at $100,000, which he posted Oct. 14, according to Sheriff's Office records.

He was taken back into custody Dec. 3. He tested positive for methamphetamine use, which violated his bond agreement, according to Ashland County Common Pleas court records.

Downing remains in the Ashland County Jail. A trial date is set for Jan. 25.
