Meet the Democrats running for Ron Johnson's seat in the U.S. Senate in Wisconsin's August 2022 primary

There were eight Wisconsin Democrats seeking the U.S. senator's seat held by Ron Johnson. In the final weeks of the primary race, Sarah Godlewski and Alex Lasry withdrew.

The winner of the Aug. 9 primary will face Johnson in the general election in November. Johnson, a Republican from Oshkosh seeks a third term.

Here are the eight Democrats you'll see on the primary ballot.

Mandela Barnes

Wisconsin Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes has promised to push for family-supporting jobs, bolster healthcare, tackle climate change and "protect our democracy and the right to vote." Barnes served two terms in the state Assembly and lost a Democratic primary for a state Senate seat before becoming lieutenant governor as running mate to Gov. Tony Evers.

Sarah Godlewski

Wisconsin Treasurer Sarah Godlewski has promised to work to create jobs, help small businesses, combat climate change, raise the minimum wage and lower the cost of prescription drugs. In 2018, she spearheaded the effort against a referendum to eliminate the state treasurer office and then won the position. Godlewski withdrew from the race on July 29.

Alex Lasry

Alex Lasry

On leave from his executive job with the Milwaukee Bucks, Alex Lasry helped spearhead Milwaukee's effort to land the 2020 Democratic National Convention. Lasry said he is someone who "can get things done" and pointed to his work with the Bucks on labor and social justice issues. Lasry withdrew from the race on July 27.

Tom Nelson

A veteran politician, Tom Nelson served six years in the state Assembly and since 2011 has served as Outagamie County Executive. Nelson has championed the state's historic paper industry and supports Medicare-for-all.

Founder and former chief executive of Millennial Action Project, Steven Olikara entered the race Aug. 17, vowing to create a "more inclusive form of politics." A Brookfield native, Olikara graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2012.

Kou Lee

Kou Lee, whose family escaped Laos when he was an infant, is a restaurant owner from Appleton.

Peter Peckarsky

Peter Peckarsky, a Milwaukee attorney, ran in 2017 for Democratic National Committee chair but dropped out.

Darrell Williams

U.S. Army veteran and educator Darrell Williams is on leave from his post as administrator of the Division of Emergency Management in the Wisconsin Department of Military Affairs.
