Meet the 2022 Michigan Wolverines, who travel to Columbus for The Game with Ohio State

When Michigan ended one of the longest losing streaks in one of sport's most famous rivalries last November, Ohio State football players and coaches were clear that the loss hurt.

A lot.

They have a chance for payback in 2022 when Michigan and coach Jim Harbaugh travel to Columbus for the next installment of the "The Game" on Nov. 26 in Ohio Stadium. The matchup will be the FOX Big Noon Kickoff game on Fox.

Ohio State's 42-27 loss to Michigan in Ann Arbor in 2021 was the first loss to the Wolverines since 2011, the gap year between two of the most successful Ohio State coaches in the rivalry, Jim Tressel and Urban Meyer.

Michigan's win over Ohio State was just the second since Tressel was hired by the Buckeyes in 2001.

Ohio State coach Ryan Day talked about the loss in a Dispatch interview before spring football. Day said:

The expectation is you win that game, and when you don't, they come at you from all different angles. It's not just yourself. It's the players. It's their families. It's your coaches. And then it's our families. It's my family. It’s my wife. It's my kids. It's everybody who's part of this program who has such pride in it. Those are tough weeks.

Michigan, like Ohio State, is expected to begin the season inside the top 10 of most preseason polls after making the College Football Playoffs for the first time. The program also saw Aidan Hutchinson, a defensive end who was a Heisman Trophy finalist, taken No.2 overall in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Here's what to know about the 2022 Michigan Wolverines.

Passive aggressive Jim Harbaugh said a thing, probably, about Ryan Day

After beating Ohio State for the first time in in a decade, Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh had choice words for Ohio State coach Ryan Day. Well, the Michigan man didn't name names, but few questioned who he was talking about.

Following the win in 2021, Harbaugh, who entered the day with an 0-6 record against the Buckeyes, seemed to respond to comments Day made the year before when he reportedly told his player they would "hang 100" on Michigan.  Michigan had to cancel the 2020 Ohio State game, so the two schools never played several months after those comments.

“There's definitely stuff people said that spurred us on,” he said. “Sometimes people that are standing on third base think they hit a triple, but they didn’t.”

Day took over for Meyer following the 2018 season and in his first season as the Buckeyes coach beat Michigan 56-27. Meyer had gone 4-0 against Harbaugh.

Ohio State vs. Michigan all-time record

Michigan leads the all-time series 59-51-6. Ohio State won eight straight games from 2012-2019 and was one win away from tying Michigan's nine-game winning streak from 1901-1909.

Ohio State is 17-3 against Michigan since Jim Tressel became head coach in 2001.

What did Michigan football do in 2021?

Entering the season on the hot seat, Harbaugh led Michigan to its best season in 15 years. The Wolverines went 12-2 and played in the program's first-ever College Football Playoff.

The school captured its first Big Ten Championship Game win, beating Iowa 42-3 and went on to lose to eventual national champion Georgia 34-11 in the CFP semifinals.

Michigan star Aidan Hutchinson was drafted second overall and Harbaugh landed a new contract extension after being rumored to be interested in returning to the NFL.

Yeah, Jim Harbaugh did not go to the NFL nor the Minnesota Vikings.

Harbaugh considered NFL coaching jobs this winter, including the Minnesota Vikings head coaching job. According to the Detroit Free Press, Harbaugh spent most of January considering NFL coaching jobs. The year before, he had taken a pay cut at Michigan.

The coach even spent National Signing Day in February in Minnesota.

But when the Vikings didn't offer Harbaugh the job on that visit, he pulled out and two weeks later had a new contract from Michigan.

What does the Michigan football schedule look like in 2022?

Michigan didn't exactly load up the non-conference slate. While Ohio State opens the season with Notre Dame, Michigan will play the gauntlet of Colorado State, Hawaii and Connecticut before starting the Big Ten season with Maryland. All those games are in Ann Arbor.

Here's what the schedule looks like:

  • Sept. 3: Colorado State

  • Sept. 10: Hawaii

  • Sept. 17: Connecticut

  • Sept. 24: Maryland

  • Oct. 1: at Iowa

  • Oct. 8: at Indiana

  • Oct. 15: Penn State

  • Oct. 29: Michigan State

  • Nov. 5: at Rutgers

  • Nov. 12: Nebraska

  • Nov. 19: Illinois

  • Nov. 26: at Ohio State

Michigan quarterback Cade McNamara returns, but will he start?

Cade McNamara returns for his senior season after starting all 14 games for Michigan in 2022. He threw for 2,576 yards and 15 touchdowns to just six interceptions as he made the All-Big Ten second team.

But some aren't sure he'll win the starting job this season, despite leading the Wolverines to the CFP.

Sophomore quarterback J.J. McCarthy, a former 5-star recruit, played in 11 games last season and threw for 516 yards on 34-of-59 passing. He missed most of spring practice with a shoulder injury.

According to the Detroit Free Press, "Harbaugh reaffirmed his openness to playing multiple quarterbacks in 2022 as he did in 2021, when McCarthy was afforded a handful of snaps in nearly every game."

The Michigan football coaching staff made changes after winning Big Ten

While Harbaugh got an extension to remain in Ann Arbor, other coaches from last year's team are gone.

Josh Gattis left Michigan for Miami to be Mario Cristobal's offensive coordinator. Meanwhile Michigan will have is third defensive coordinator in three years after Mike MacDonald left the program to work for coach John Harbaugh with the Baltimore Ravens.

Michigan replaced Gattis, a popular name to succeed Harbaugh had he left for the NFL, with Matt Weiss and Sherrone Moore.

From 2009 to 2020, Weiss worked for the Baltimore Ravens (this is a trend). Weiss also previously worked for Jim Harbaugh at Stanford from 2005-2008.

Defensively, Michigan hired Jesse Minter who had been the Vanderbilt defensive coordinator last season. It was his only season in the SEC and before that he worked with the, surprise, Baltimore Ravens as the defensive backs coach.

Minter's father Rick coached the University of Cincinnati from 1994-2003.

Who are the best NFL 2023 Draft prospects on Michigan

Last year Michigan had a player taken second overall, and if that happens again someone is going to have to climb up the mock draft. Mel Kiper Jr. doesn't list any Michigan player in his top 25 big board, but he does have several players on his positional top-10 list.

2023 NFL Draft: Could Jaxon Smith-Ngijba do something no Ohio State WR has ever done? Mel Kiper says yes.

Perhaps the best NFL prospect is kicker Jake Moody, who Kiper lists as the No. 3 kicker/punter available in the draft.

Center Olusegun Oluwatimi (fourth), tight end Erick All (eighth) and offensive tackle Ryan Hayes (eighth) are also in Kiper's top 10 for their positions.
