2022 Providence Journal All State Field Hockey First Team
The Providence Journal is pleased to announce the nominees for Field Hockey Athlete of the Year at the All-State Rhode Island High School Sports Awards, which will be back with an exciting live event on June 27 at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium.
The nine-month student-athlete recognition program will culminate in an in-person show, featuring the top student-athletes from the state of Rhode Island. The event’s time, date and venue are still to be determined and will be announced soon.
During the live show, these nominees will be honored, along with the player of the year for each sport. The awards showcase will also feature other premier awards for both on- and off-the-field accomplishments of student-athletes, coaches and teams, including a courage award and coach of the year, team of the year, and the boys and girls athlete of the year awards.
All official nominees who RSVP may attend this event at no charge, thanks to sponsors. Check regularly at the show's website for updated information on how to attend.
The All-State Rhode Island High School Sports Awards is part of the USA TODAY High School Sports Awards, which is the largest high school sports recognition program in the country. Last year’s show can be viewed online at this link.
This year, one school from the area will win a $1,000 donation to its school’s athletic department. More details on that are coming soon.
Callie Caito
La Salle, Senior
Forward
It shouldn’t be a surprise that the three best years in La Salle field hockey history coincided with Caito’s emergence. An All-Stater each of the last three seasons, Caito was the offensive weapon the Rams needed to succeed. Her play helped La Salle become a state title contender before seeing the journey end in the semifinals. Caito won’t go far away to continue her career, playing at Bryant in the fall.
Kathryn Gauvin
Moses Brown, Sophomore
Forward
The Quakers have a way of reloading talent and Gauvin seems poised to be the program’s next big star. A transfer from Durfee High School in Fall River, Gauvin made an immediate impact for Moses Brown this year and gave the team an unstoppable 1-2 punch up top. The sophomore finished her season with 14 goals and seven assists, a preview of things to come the next two seasons.
Lily Procaccianti
Moses Brown, Senior
Forward
It’s the third time Procaccianti has earned All-State honors and second as a First-Teamer, and after scoring 29 goals to go with 15 assists, it shouldn’t be a surprise to see her here. The one goal Procaccianti wanted she also got as a key piece in the Quakers’ run to a state championship. Procaccianti will stay close to continue her career, playing at Providence College in the fall.
Maeve Kiernan
East Greenwich, Sophomore
Midfield
While All-State teammate Alex Mega drew most of the attention, Kiernan had a breakthrough season and looks ready to pick up where Mega left off. Using her speed as a weapon, Kiernan covered the entire field for the Avengers and seemed to be in on every play. She was a flyer on penalty corners and finished with six goals and nine assists — numbers that should jump next fall.
Alex Mega
East Greenwich, Senior
Midfield
Mega was more than just the best player in East Greenwich program history; she has a claim as the best player the state’s ever seen. Unstoppable doesn’t begin to describe her senior season as she finished with 40 goals and 21 assists. In her four years at East Greenwich, Mega scored 108 goals with 48 assists and led the Avengers to three state titles. Her playing career will continue next fall at Northeastern University in Boston.
Emma Mueller
Barrington, Sophomore
Midfield
Mueller was a dynamic scorer up front for the Eagles as a freshman, earning Second Team All-State honors, but she took her game to new heights this fall in the midfield. The sophomore showed no fear and embraced the challenge of taking on the state’s top players. Mueller finished her season with 13 goals and seven assists and will be one of the big dogs in the state next fall.
Jade Shabo
North Kingstown, Senior
Midfield
If there’s such a thing as a clutch gene, it’s clear the Skippers’ senior star has it. A First-Team All-Stater on the ice last winter, Shabo was the glue that held North Kingstown together all season. In the Division I postseason, she was at her best and converted a penalty stroke in the fourth quarter that gave the Skippers the title and sent retiring coach Julie Maguire out with a championship.
Lila Stilley
Moses Brown, Freshman
Defensive midfield
The future was now for Stilley and the Quakers. Stepping right into the shadow left by her All-State sister, Stilley was a force as a defender. Her speed and agility allowed her to cover more ground than your typical back and she played with the intensity of a senior. Wherever Stilley plays next season, she’ll be worth watching as she tries to help Moses Brown win another state title.
Emily Dubord
La Salle, Senior
Defense
A second-team selection last fall, Dubord left little doubt about her abilities this season. She was an anchor in the back for the Rams and routinely flummoxed some of the state’s elite scorers. While her play stood out on the field, she was also a leader La Salle needed in some of the biggest moments of the season, which saw the Rams reach the State Championship semifinals.
Abigail Martel
Barrington, Senior
Defense
The Eagles never hid from their identity. They were going to try to win games with defense and with a player like Martel, it was easy to see why. Martel was an anchor in the back who paired her athletic talent and stick skills with her ability to see the field and make life difficult for the state’s best offenses. It’s the second straight First-Team selection for Martel.
Cat Neville
East Greenwich, Junior
Defense
Neville earns her second straight First-Team selection and it’s easy to see why. The quarterback of the Avengers’ defense, Neville plays with poise and dominates with her mind as much as her physical skills. She handled free-ball duties for East Greenwich and when Neville got involved in corners, she made the most of her opportunities with two goals and 10 assists this season.
Julia Bender
La Salle, Senior
Goalie
There’s a certain mindset needed to play goalie and it’s been clear Bender has it. Her fearless approach in front of the net enabled her to be the aggressor in goal, imposing her will on offensive players. Bender’s height and wingspan allowed her to cut angles few goaltenders could and her reaction time and athleticism were a delight to watch as she earned her second straight spot as a First-Team All-Stater.
