Meet the 2022 T&G Hometeam high school girls' basketball Super Team and honorable mentions
The Worcester Telegram is proud to announce the nominees for the Hometeam girls' basketball player of the year for the Central Mass High School Sports Awards, presented by DCU - Digital Federal Credit Union, will be held live on Wednesday, June 22, at Hanover Theatre & Conservatory for the Performing Arts, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
During the live show, these nominees will be honored, and the player of the year will be selected. Learn more on the program and see which athletes have already been named nominees on the show’s website. Athletes must register for the event here. Each nominated athlete will receive one free ticket for their admittance to the show. Additional tickets may be purchased here.
The Central Mass High School Awards show is part of the USA TODAY High School Sports Awards, the largest high school sports recognition program in the country.
Here are the Hometeam girls' basketball player of the year nominees:
Emmy Allyn
Wachusett Regional
Junior, Point guard
Allyn averaged 8 points, 4 assists, 2 rebounds and 2 steals to help lead the Mountaineers to their fourth straight undefeated regular season and an appearance in the semifinals of the Division 1 state tournament. Allyn scored a team-high 16 points in Wachusett’s regular-season finale against Concord-Carlisle. Wachusett finished its fantastic season 23-1. Allyn scored 13 points in Wachusett’s second-round win over Reading. Coming back to beat Woburn, 51-49, in the quarterfinals and advance to the semis was her most memorable moment of the season. Allyn was a first-team Mid-Wach League all-star. She would like to study engineering in college. She is the daughter of Kelly and Keith Allyn of Rutland.
Jessica Forbes
Tahanto Regional
Junior, Center
Forbes averaged 17.8 points and 13 rebounds to lead Tahanto to its first league championship. The Stags captured Mid-Wach D with a 10-2 record (16-7 overall), and that was Forbes’ most memorable moment of the season. Forbes posted 15 double-doubles and scored a career-high 31 points in a Division 5 state tournament preliminary round win over Mt. Alvernia. Forbes scored 20 or more points in seven games. Forbes served as a team captain, was league MVP and earned league all-star honors for the third time. Forbes also stars in soccer and was the league MVP last fall. She hopes to continue her athletic career in college. She is the daughter of Amy and John Forbes of Clinton.
Bri Frongillo
Hopedale
Senior, Point guard
Frongillo earned her third T&G Hometeam Super Team selection after leading Central Mass. in scoring (28.3 ppg) for the third consecutive season and leading the Blue Raiders to their first state championship. Hopedale captured the Division 5 title with a win over Hoosac Valley. Frongillo, a three-time captain, finished her illustrious career with 2,239 points and as the all-time leading scorer in girls’ or boys’ school history. She averaged 22.4 points in her career, also a Hopedale record. A three-time Dual Valley Conference player of the year, Frongillo scored a Hopedale record 650 points this season. In the state semifinals, she sank two free throws with 3.1 seconds left to lift the Blue Raiders past Sabis, 58-56. She finished with 31 points. In the fall, she will attend Bryant University, where she will play basketball. She is the daughter of Bill and Susan Frongillo of Hopedale.
Mary Gibbons
Wachusett Regional
Sophomore, Guard
Gibbons earned her second T&G Hometeam Super Team honor after leading Central Mass. Division 1 in scoring and helping the Mountaineers to their fourth straight undefeated regular season and an appearance in the state semifinals. Gibbons averaged 16.9 points per game and buried 56 3-pointers while leading Wachusett to a 23-1 record. In the Mountaineers’ come-from-behind win over Woburn in the state quarterfinals, Gibbons scored a game-high 18 points. Winning that game on Wachusett’s home court and celebrating the semifinal berth with teammates, family and fans was Gibbons’ most memorable moment of the season. She was the Mid-Wach A MVP. Her hobbies include running, drawing and traveling. She is the daughter of Tom and Amanda Gibbons of Holden.
Charlotte Head
Wachusett Regional
Senior, Forward/Center
Head earned T&G Hometeam Super Team honors for the second straight year after helping to lead the Mountaineers to their fourth straight undefeated regular season and an appearance in the Division 1 state tournament semifinals. Head averaged 11.3 points to rank second on the team. In Wachusett’s thrilling, come-from-behind win over Woburn in the state quarterfinals, Head scored 13 points, including nine in the critical fourth quarter. The 51-49 victory, which was her last home game, was Head’s most memorable moment of the season. Head served as a captain and earned Mid-Wach League all-star honors for the second straight year. She is undecided on her college plans, but will double major in business management and political science. She is the daughter of Erika and Jeff Head of Holden.
Shirle Major
St. Paul Diocesan
Senior, Guard
Major averaged 15.7 points per game to rank second in the Central Mass. Conference. In her final game, Major scored a season-high 28 points, including the 1,000th of her career, against Notre Dame Academy. The accomplishment was her most memorable moment of the season. She scored 25 points in an early-season game against NDA, and 21 in a victory over Grafton. Major, a member of the varsity squad since she was an eighth-grader, served as a senior captain. In the fall, she will attend Lasell University, where she will study business management. She would like to own a business or casino. She is the daughter of Christina Booker of Worcester.
Avery Marzo
Notre Dame Academy
Junior, Guard
Marzo averaged 21.6 points to top the Central Mass. Conference and lead the Rebels to the second round of the Division 4 state tournament. Marzo scored 21 points in NDA’s first-round win over Southwick-Tolland. Playing in the state tourney was Marzo’s most memorable moment of the season. She averaged 5 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 4.3 steals and 1.9 blocks, and Notre Dame finished 16-6. Marzo dished out 10 assists in NDA’s regular-season finale win over St. Bernard’s. Marzo, who served as a team captain, averaged 25.2 points during the Rebels’ midseason five-game winning streak. Her hobbies include fitness training. Marzo would like to study medicine or law in college. She is the daughter of Joseph and Susan Marzo of Shrewsbury.
Emery Mullen
Shepherd Hill Regional
Junior, Guard
Mullen averaged 14.2 points and nine rebounds to lead the Rams to a share of the Mid-Wach B League title (with Westborough) and the first round of the Division 2 state tournament. Mullen averaged 4.5 assists and 3.1 steals and earned Mid-Wach B League MVP honors. Mullen is a three-time league all-star. She’s a junior, but the Rams’ Senior Night win over Groton-Dunstable was her most memorable moment of the season. Three players scored in double figures, including Mullen with 11, and Shepherd Hill clinched a share of the league title while celebrating its seniors. Mullen is a three-time T&G Super Team selection in cross country and a member of the National Honor Society. She is the daughter of Christina and Martin Mullen of Charlton.
Hanorah Murphy
Auburn
Junior, Guard
Murphy averaged 27.9 points per game to lead SWCL A. She poured in 42 points twice, and averaged nine rebounds. She opened the year with a 37-point, 16-rebound performance in a win over Bartlett. Being able to play with her teammates, after the pandemic canceled Auburn’s 2020-21 season, was Murphy’s most memorable moment of the year. She served as team captain and earned SWCL all-star honors. She was MVP of the SWCL All-Star Game. Murphy is a member of Student Council and the National Honor Society, and is involved with Unified Basketball at Auburn. Her hobbies include reading and playing tennis. She would like to work in healthcare. She is the daughter of Margaret and Michael Murphy of Auburn.
Tamia Nunes
South
Senior, Forward
Nunes averaged 18 points, 12 rebounds and 8 assists to help lead the Colonels to a 20-2 record and the Division 2 state tournament round of 16. South rode a 20-game winning streak into its second-round matchup at Walpole. Nunes scored 19 points in South’s first-round win at Holyoke. She poured in a season-high 40 points against Notre Dame Academy and had a 20-game double-double streak. Nunes, a captain, was Inter-High MVP. Among all of Nunes’ accomplishments in 2021-22, changing the South girls’ basketball culture and “having people really know who South High is” was her most memorable moment of the season. She is undecided on her college plans, but she would like to study business and continue playing basketball. She is the daughter of Stefanie Tasse of Worcester.
Grace O’Gara
South
Senior, Point guard
O’Gara averaged 18.4 points per game to top the Inter-High and helped lead the Colonels’ resurgent season. South rode a 20-game winning streak into its Division 2 state tournament second-round game at Walpole. The Colonels fell, but finished 20-2. O’Gara was outstanding at both ends, and midseason, posted back-to-back triple doubles against Tantasqua (19 points, 15 rebounds, 10 steals) and Grafton (27 points, 10 assists, 10 steals). Heading into a January game against North, O’Gara needed 30 points for 1,000 in her career. She scored 32 in the first half. Sharing the milestone with her teammates and their fans was her most memorable moment of the season. In the fall, O’Gara will attend Marianapolis Prep for a postgraduate year. She hopes to play basketball and study sports psychology in college. She is the daughter of Cynthia and Mike O’Gara of Worcester.
Gabby Soter
David Prouty
Senior, Point guard
Soter averaged 19.1 points per game to lead SWCL C and rank fourth in Central Mass. She scored 20 points in the Panthers’ Division 5 state tournament preliminary round win over Smith Vocational, and 18 in a first-round win over league foe Quaboag Regional. Avenging two regular-season losses to the Cougars was Soter’s most memorable moment of the season. Soter finished her career with 914 points (David Prouty did not play in 2020-21 due to the pandemic), including 381 this season. She made 41 3-pointers in 2021-22. Soter was a three-time SWCL all-star. In the fall, she will attend the University of New England, where she will play basketball and study applied exercise science and environmental science. She is the daughter of Sandra and Robert Soter of Spencer.
