Meet and chat with The Charlotte Observer staff at our next mobile newsroom

The Charlotte Observer Mobile Newsroom is off to the next stop — to communities in the Beatties Ford Road corridor — and we’re excited to meet them.

Beginning next month, The Observer will be at the Allegra Westbrooks Regional Library. We will be in residency there for the next six to eight weeks to learn more about this community, the issues they care about and to cover it in ways we’ve never done before.

As a kickoff, the branch will host “Meet the Charlotte Observer Staff “ Monday, April 3, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m., 2412 Beatties Ford Rd. We invite the community to come and tell us about your neighborhood and your concerns. Bring your questions and conversation and learn more about how we do our jobs. Light refreshments will be served.

Residents from Hidden Valley and surrounding neighborhoods gather at Sugar Creek Library to meet the Charlotte Observer editors and reporters on Jan. 19, 2023.

Anchored by Johnson C. Smith University, the city’s only historically Black college, the Beatties Ford Road corridor is home to many historically Black communities — Lincoln Heights, Dalebrook, McCrorey Heights, Oaklawn Park — to name a few.

The Observer over the years has not done its best with covering these neighborhoods. But with the mobile newsroom, our goal is to connect with all of you and learn which stories you’d like to see in the news. How can we best cover your communities?

During our presence in Hidden Valley at the Sugar Creek Library — our pilot mobile newsroom — we produced 26 stories about the neighbors, the community leaders, issues of concern such as gentrification, affordable housing, and some bright features. We look forward to seeing you on April 3, and encourage you to drop by the Beatties Ford Road branch to connect with us over the next several weeks.
