Meet the Detroit Free Press 2023 girls basketball Dream Team and All-State teams

Meet the 2023 Detroit Free Press' girls basketball Dream Team and All-State teams:

Dream Team

Faith Carson

School: Buchanan

Vitals: 6 feet 4, senior, forward/center.

Stats: Carson averaged 20.5 points, 12.4 rebounds, 5.8 blocks and 1.7 assists per game. She had two triple-doubles.

The buzz: Carson didn’t play last season due to an ankle injury, but more than made up for it with a dominant senior year. Also an accomplished volleyball player, Carson has signed to play in college at Ohio State.

Buchanan coach Gabe Miller: “Faith accomplished all of this while facing a variety of different zone defenses, double- and triple-teams, and some extremely physical defense. The biggest area of improvement I observed from her sophomore to senior season was on the defensive end, where she anchored our defense that gave up just 32 points a game.”

Kennedy Blair

School: Dearborn Divine Child

Vitals: 5-9, senior, guard.

Stats: Blair averaged 25 points, 9.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists, four steals and two blocks per game.

The buzz: A do-it-all player who led Divine Child in several statistical categories, Kennedy will go down as one of the all-time greats to play in the Catholic League. She has signed to play in college for Bowling Green.

Divine Child coach Mary Laney: “Kennedy is such a special player who just has a complete game. She has worked hard over the last four years to become the elite player and floor leader that she is today. She led our team in just about every statistical category her entire career and while her numbers are remarkable, what is most impressive is the passion with which she plays, her innate competitive nature and her ability to lead on the floor and take over a game when necessary.”

Macy Brown (captain)

School: East Grand Rapids

Vitals: 6-0, senior, guard/forward.

Stats: Brown averaged 25.1 points, 8.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists this year.

The buzz: Brown finished her career with 1,537 points and was named the winner of the Mick McCabe Miss Basketball Award to finish off a brilliant high school career. Signed with Michigan, Brown was virtually unguardable with her ability to score in many ways.

East Grand Rapids coach Troy Hammond: “It’s her ability to lead other kids. Every kid on our team, would run through a brick wall for Macy. There’s a charisma to her. She has a way about her that makes everybody around her feel special and valued.”

Janae Tyler

School: Holt

Vitals: 6-1, senior, forward/center

Stats: Tyler averaged 17.9 points and over 12 rebounds a game.

Holt's Janae Tyler, left, pulls down a rebound over DeWitt's Alex Charles during the second quarter on Thursday, March 9, 2023, at Coldwater High School.
Holt's Janae Tyler, left, pulls down a rebound over DeWitt's Alex Charles during the second quarter on Thursday, March 9, 2023, at Coldwater High School.

The buzz: The biggest reason Holt advanced to a Division 1 state quarterfinal was the play of Tyler, a four-year player who leaves as arguably the best in school history. Signed with Kent State, she finished with career school records in points (1,388) and rebounds (944).

Indya Davis

School: West Bloomfield

Vitals: 5-9, junior, guard/forward.

Stats: Davis averaged 15.6 points and 8.5 rebounds this year for the Lakers.

West Bloomfield guard Indya Davis (24) makes a pass against Rockford guard Anna Wypych (2) during the first half of the MHSAA Division 1 girls basketball final at Breslin Center in East Lansing on Saturday, March 18, 2023.

The buzz: One half of West Bloomfield’s incredible duo along with twin sister Summer, Davis was a force all season long in leading the Lakers to their second straight appearance in the state championship game. She should be poised for a big senior year.

West Bloomfield coach Darren McAllister: “Indya Davis is our most versatile player. She is a walking bucket-getter. She has the ability to score at all three levels. Each year, she is getting better and better.”

Coach Brad Wilson

School: Rockford

The buzz: After a majority of Rockford’s roster returned from a team that made the state semifinals in 2022, expectations were high for the Rams. Those expectations were fully met, with the Rams (28-1) winning their first state championship in school history with a 40-36 win over West Bloomfield in the Division 1 final.

Rockford finished with a 28-1 record.

“We know that we’re a good enough team that we can win in a lot of different ways,” Wilson said after the win over West Bloomfield. “If the game got a little faster and we had to get up and run a little bit, we could have done that. If we needed to hit more threes because they were clogging the middle, we could have done that.”
